God gave each believer spirit gift(s) to build up the body (Ephesians 4:11-13). The Holy Spirit alone decides what gift to bestow on each individual believer. Some are given the gift to teach. Some are given the gift to encourage. Some are given the gift to show mercy. Some can lead in administration. The Bible did not give a complete list. However, we can recognize the gift when we see that individual using that gift for the building up of the body of Christ.
Of all the gifts, the most important gift to exercise is love (1 Corinthians 13). Without love, all gifts amount to nothing. Whether we lead in teaching, worship, giving, administration, mercy, if we do not do these things from love, we accomplish nothing.
In regards to prophecies and tongues, we are witnessing many false prophecies and tongues in this world, and the exercise of these false expressions are hurting people. Though many may argued that the gifts of tongues or prophecy ceased, the only clear and emphatic teaching on the cessation of these gifts is in 1 Corinthians 13:8, where Paul declares that these gifts will cease when the “perfect comes,” namely when we are in the perfect presence of Christ in eternity. Though the scriptures do not teach emphatically on the duration or even frequency of these gifts on earth, it does speaks emphatically on the function of these gifts. Here at FBCH, we teach the biblical function of these gifts as taught in 1 Corinthians 14 for the protection and the encouragement of the flock.
